Celebrating turning 30 at The Little Hide

Last year I promised myself that I would mark turning thirty by doing something special. I was talking to a friend about how nervous I felt about having a party, and she suggested having a joint 30th celebration – something I could absolutely get on board with. We did some research and decided that The Little Hide a few miles outside York city centre would be the perfect base, and hoped our friends would be excited for a night away – to our delight, they were!

The Little Hide describes itself as ‘a getaway for grown-ups’. Each wooden glamping pod is fully furnished and children are not allowed on site, which I’ll admit was really nice (!) The whole feel of The Little Hide is laid back and relaxed. There is plenty of outdoor furniture, and we brought bunting and a few decorations to make our stay feel personal and cosy. Check in is from 1pm, meaning we could socialise all afternoon before getting ready to go out for the evening.

Our group headed into York around 7pm to eat, followed by dancing until late and then we found ourselves eating cake around a fire around 2am. In the morning we woke early and had a breakfast BBQ as the sun was shining so beautifully – the perfect end to such a special occasion. After feeling so nervous the whole week before, I was so relieved that everything went to plan and amazed at how glorious the weather turned out to be. We Brits know firsthand how unpredictable weather can be!

One thing that struck me as we were planning our little get together was how it pays to plan ahead. How often do we say to friends – “Oh, we must meet up”, “We must do something” and never actually do it? Choose a date way in advance and get it booked in. It is so nice to look forward to spending quality time with people that you really enjoy being with.

Thirty feels like the first of many big ages to come. My twenties have been brilliant, and my life has changed drastically since the twenty year old student taking her final year of university – I’ve birthed three children, bought a house, got married, my dad is no longer here and each day is so different from the last. I feel excited for the future and so thankful for all the amazing people I get to share it with – my mum, Jared, my boys, my siblings, family, close friends and friends that I don’t see often, but have a deep and lasting impact.

Maybe turning thirty later this month won’t be so bad after all?
